We set off fully laden and pick up the van from York Caravan Park. It’s 1 hour from York to Hull. Pulling in to the port, tickets, then queue….for 1 minute and straight on at 5.40pm. Not bad P&O Ferries. Room 10209 an outside cabin which requires the very nice Asian boy to sort out our heating as it was like a sauna.
We decide to use the restaurant tonight and have a very pleasant meal. Mushroom topped cheese and a Lamb shank for Mike and Scallops and sea bass for me all washed down with a nice bottle of wine.
The captain warns of a force 5 – 6 gales tonight and some swell. Oh dear, but as it turned out one of the smoothest crossings ever and the memory foam beds are great. I purchase some Hendricks gin.

Clocks go forward. 6.45am up and down to the restaurant for breakfast. Porridge and a small breakfast for me plus luke warm T. Mike had the same but a large breakfast. £38 and not worth it, very poor. Back to the cabin and down to level 3 when called. We were facing the wrong way with the caravan and no one came to give us instructions, eventually we got off and started our journey to Cochem with sunshine all the way. Arriving at 3.30pm.
We get a pitch right on the banks of the Moselle. Thank god we had the mover as we had to get the van up a grass verge then turn it around 180 degrees so the door faced the river. Movers are cool. Walk into Cochem. Very pretty. Went to supermarket for Food and wine by Aldi (surprised). Going through the entry barrier at 2.5 m damaged the bikes as we didn’t realise, bugger. Decide to buy a menulator for Germany as food names are not that obvious.
From the van we can see huge barges and floating hotels drifting past, passenger trains and long freight trains and of course cars. It is noisy but somehow it is interesting. Did have ear plugs in though to sleep.

Today starts with mist hanging over the cliffs. A dull day. We had a good nights sleep and walk into Cochem past the Viking river cruise boat. We did a trip on one of these from Switzerland to Amsterdam down the Rhine. (Too many walking sticks and zimmers for us.)
We get a good walk around the town and sit in the market square waiting for the bell carillon to chime (we share this experience with Viking river people). Then a walk up to the castle. It is closed! They are filming a Chinese/German action movie (wtf) which finishes today.
Back in the town a lovely German salesman persuades me to buy some wine after a tasting. Trocken is dry? (almost). Down to the market square again as it starts raining so we have onion soup (thank you menulator) and a drink under a canopy.
We learnt that a dick boner is a broad bean ????!

Today is sunny. Leisurely getting up then a sun bathe. (It’s a hard life), then a cycle up stream on the side of the Moselle. It is breathtakingly beautiful, stopped for a drink at Bielstein which had a interesting ferry and a Viking river cruise stop and berth. We did 15 miles. Great day. Back for a BBQ just before it rained.
