THE ROUTE

Thursday 6/7/17
We pack up and head north to St Antonin Noble Val. The journey was 3 hours and we had a great view of Carcassonne on our right as we left.
We arrive at les gorge de l’Aveyron and set up. It’s like Robin Hood and prince of thieves. Lovely forest setting and riverside. Washing done and hung up to dry, showers and a cycle into town along an almost off road single track that comes out at the famous bridge I painted in 2006.
The town is as enchanting as we remember. The square where the bell tower and covered market building had guitar live music and after checking out a couple of restaurants we decide on les beffois. Best meal up to now **** tomato and buffalo, plus confit of duck, and Caesar salad and “well done” ie medium steak for mike, I followed with assiette of cheese and mike had a chocolate fondue with fruits to dip. All washed down with a litre of local wine, perfect.
Friday 7/7/17
Today was great. We had a gentle cycle into town, a tourist walk around the town discovering new bits. A drink in the square (lovely waiter) and a walk up to the local Carrefour in 36 degree heat. I cook an amazing curry and Mike goes off and gets chilled rosé, strawberries and cream. We set up the table near the river Aveyrón and, well, fab, fab, fab. After the meal I have a snooze (not a sleep but a lovely drifting off and then coming round in the best possible way). Mike washes up, tea is offered. Shower then off into town to bar gazpacho. Nice local bar and a very pleasant evening. The frogs are laughing at us all the way home. Ham and cheese sarnies at homes. Mike cut 2 more fingers. ????
Saturday 8/7/17
Today we are revisiting our holiday from 11 years ago with our friends Pat and Tim, John and Mike. Driving from St Antonin Noble Val to Penne then on to Castlenau Montmirel. This was one hell of a cycle ride and memory has played her trick to make it into the most difficult day ever. Driving the route we realise it really was the most horrendous cycle ever! We stopped at Penne with its tower leaning vertically on a single rock. Very impressive. We had a delicious roquefore salad and chips at the same cafe as before then on to Castlenau. It was lovely and we went through the Forest of Gresnie spotting our picnic spot from the time before.
Back to the site and ready for a final trip into this beautiful town.
Sunday 9/7/17
Its a travel day. It’s also our tenth anniversary since our civil partnership. It’s been a bit wet overnight. ???? we pack up and head off. Bugger mike caught a Dutch car as we are leaving. We leave them a note and hopefully all will be ok. Interesting journey to Sarlat as we went to Bon Ombrages instead of Les Ombrages. Only 20 miles off course and as a result we head through some lovely new areas we must revisit.
Rain is forecast but after setting up we decide to cycle on the route velo which goes all the way into Sarlat (10 miles), we have a 3 course meal and wine for €56. Cycle back and sit by the river as the night pulls in, watching the black river. Really enjoyed it!
Monday 10/7/17
Another very lazy day. We go to Roque Gigeau which we saw on our detour, I think it’s a tourist place all fur coat and no knickers. The French or France is too expensive. Two salads for lunch. £10 each.
Back to the van for my best curry followed by strawberries and squirts cream. We watch the first of the X men films. Sleep.
Tuesday 11/7/17
A lazy start. Mike does some washing and we go to Souillac lidl for supplies. (We had to call off at leClerc to get everything). Lunch then cycle into Sarlat. GREAT! We have a wander and have a cocktail in the main square. 15.50€ and mike gives the waiter a 2.50€ tip (money bags????) then a good meal. Mike has a hot rock to cook his meat on, very tasty. Lovely cycle back.????
