The Trent and Mersey canal reaches its summit in Stoke on Trent with a massive Etruria lock raising boats 13’2”. It is the 10th deepest on the canal network.
The once bustling factories on the canal are in a sad state of affairs in the main but for one which is preserved as a museum called Middleport pottery. Unfortunately due to Covid virus restrictions it was closed and we were unable to visit
Our next excitement was the voyage through Harecastle tunnel which is 2675 metres long and very low in the middle, better than any bare knuckle ride for free.
Being picky, its HareCastle Tunnel not HardCastle.
